Official summary: "Nikki Beckett could only watch as her boyfriend, Jack, sacrificed himself to save her, taking her place in the Tunnels of the Everneath for eternity — a debt that should've been hers. Now she is living a borrowed life, and she doesn't know what to do with the guilt. And every night, Jack appears in her dreams, lost and confused and wasting away. No matter how she tries to reach for his hand, she can never find it. Desperate for answers, Nikki turns to Cole, the immortal bad boy who wants to make her his queen — and the one person least likely to help. But his heart has been touched by everything about Nikki, and he agrees to help in the only way he can: by taking her to the Everneath himself. Nikki and Cole, along with Cole's bandmate Max, descend into the Everneath, only to discover that their journey will be more difficult than they'd anticipated — and more deadly. From a Lake of Blood and Guilt to Sirens' alluring tricks to insurmountable walls of rock and flame, the trio is given every reason to turn back and give up. But Nikki vows to stop at nothing to save Jack — even if it means making an incredible sacrifice of her own." (http://brodiashton.blogspot.com)

How I obtained the book: Checked out of library

My commentary:
  • I'm not sure what I think about this series. I find it very interesting, but I'm not sure I like it all that much. I definitely don't like it enough to buy the books. Normally if I like a series, I want to have copies of all the books basically as trophies on my bookshelves, but I have no desire to buy these. It's weird.

Memorable quotes:
  • "My bed is empty, and I'm left with only my guilt for a companion. I hug my pillow tight and wonder how long I will be able to survive with the crack in my heart. Perhaps it will grow large enough to consume me." ~ Nikki
  • "Dr. Hill couldn't help me face reality, because my reality was so unreal to humans." ~ Nikki
  • "I want you to know, here and now, that if we can't get Jack back... you won't be able to stop me from kill Cole. Whether I have to break his heart or tear him apart." ~ Will
  • "You showed me that relationships are worth sacrifices. I used to think they were fleeting, but I know better now. You made me a better person. I mean, a better immortal." ~ Cole to Nikki
  • "You can't hide your humanity!" ~ Cole to Nikki
  • "Nobody lost points for going the wrong way at first in a maze. But they did in life. Every wrong turn had an effect on the rest of the maze. Every mistake affected the path." ~ Nikki
  • "Memories were part of what I kept secured in the dam around my heart." ~ Nikki
  • "Let's take inventory of our priorities. First, go to the Underworld and save my brother. Second, don't die while doing it. Third, start a grassroots campaign to add diversity to the state's conservative legislature. Fourth, then maybe tackle my excessive drinking." ~ Will to Nikki
  • "You're looking at my hair like an addict at a crack carnival." ~ Cole to Nikki
  • "It's like your brain is on a ten-second delay." ~ Cole to Nikki
  • "You've got some strong memories. Usually the human projections look like an aura, almost, around the person. I knew yours would be stronger because you survived the Feed, but I thought that meant you would project a more focused object, like a rope. You, however, are projecting an entire national park." ~ Cole to Nikki
  • "(Wanderers) are starving for energy, and they can sniff it out and all of this is basically a neon sign that says EAT AT JOE'S." ~ Cole
  • "You always did enjoy the impossible tasks." ~ Ashe to Cole
  • "Everlings had a way of infusing ordinary objects with deeper meaning." ~ Nikki
  • "Get too wet, and you could drown in your own despair." ~ Cole about the Ring of Water
  • "Love doesn't matter here." ~ Queen
