Official summary: "To save her mother’s life, Clary must travel to the City of Glass, the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters — never mind that entering the city without permission is against the Law, and breaking the Law could mean death. To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight. As Clary uncovers more about her family’s past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadowhunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadowhunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he’s willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her newfound powers to help save the Glass City — whatever the cost? Love is a mortal sin and the secrets of the past prove deadly as Clary and Jace face down Valentine." (http://www.cassandraclare.com)

How I obtained the book: Bought for $4.94 at used book store. (It was a publisher's remainder, not actually used)

My commentary:  It's been totally crazy reading this series when I am because all sorts of news of the upcoming movie has been coming out. Part of me wishes I would've read the books sooner, but part of me is happy that I'm getting in on the excitement while the books are so fresh for me.

Memorable quotes:
  • "Normal isn't all it's cracked up to be." ~ Luke
  • "Some Laws were meant to be broken." ~ Luke
  • "You can't just go around asking people what it's like to be a vampire." ~ Isabelle to Aline
  • "It sucked to be old enough to want to know what was going on, but so young you were always dismissed." ~ Simon about Max
  • "Isabelle only likes dating thoroughly inappropriate boys our parents will hate. Mundanes, Downworlders, petty crooks..." ~ Alec
"Thanks. I'm glad to be classed with the criminal element." ~ Simon
  • "One thing you'll learn as you get older, Simon, is that when people tell you something unpleasant about themselves, it's usually true." ~ Samuel
  • "I have a fetish for damsels in distress. ... My services are also available to gentlemen in distress. It's an equal opportunity fetish." ~ Jace
  • "Hurting people he loved was almost as good as hurting himself when he was in this kind of mood." ~ Jace
  • "What was the point in crying when there was no one there to comfort you? And what was worse, when you couldn't even comfort yourself?" ~ Clary
  • "Regret is such a pointless emotion." ~ Magnus
  • "A true vampire knows he is dead. He accepts his death." ~ Raphael
  • "Consider it a race to see who kills you first, Daylighter -- Valentine, the other Downworlders, or the Clave." ~ Samuel to Simon
  • "In Isabelles's world, rage equaled passion equaled a good time."
  • "It must be nice not worrying that every time one of your family members walked out the door, they'd never come back." ~ Clary
  • "It was strange to become a vampire, to be presented with what could only be described as an eternal life, and then to die anyway when you were sixteen." ~ Simon
  • "You had to make a crazy jail friend, didn't you? You couldn't just count ceiling tiles or tame a pet mouse like normal prisoners do?" ~ Jace to Simon
  • "I swear, there are utterly lightless demon dimensions out there that are less dim than the bunch of you." ~ Sebastian
  • "People aren't born good or bad. Maybe they're born with tendencies either way, but it's the way you live your life that matters." ~ Simon
  • "Even the cleverest puzzle has a solution." ~ Luke
  • "Has there ever been an Inquisitor who didn't die a horrible death? It's like being the drummer in Spinal Tap." ~ Simon
  • "You live to torture me, don't you?" ~ Jace to Clary
  • "I love you, and I will love you until I die, and if there's a life after that, I'll love you then. ... I couldn't love you like I do if I wasn't at least a little bit human. Because demons want. But they don't love." ~ Jace to Clary
  • "If your father weren't who he is, he'd be proud of you." ~ Luke to Jace
  • "You could say anything you wanted to someone you thought you were never going to see again." ~ Clary
  • "I started to hate seeing you. I hated for Jace to see you. It's like an injury you get from demon poison -- you have to leave it alone and let it heal. Every time you rip the bandages off, you just open the wound up again. Every time he sees you, it's like tearing off the bandages." ~ Isabelle
  • "Knowing is better than not knowing. Every time." ~ Clary
  • "If you ever meet the man who could take advantage of Isabelle, you'll have to let me know. I'd like to shake his hand. Or run away from him very fast, I'm not sure which." ~ Simon
  • "No one could be that annoying without some kind of supernatural assistance." ~ Simon about Jace
  • "You can only push the truth down for so long, and then it bubbles back up." ~ Simon
  • "You're a vampire, not Spider-Man." ~ Clary to Simon
  • "Doing the right thing because you love someone sucks sometimes." ~ Clary
  • "Power doesn't have to be unlimited to be deadly." ~ Valentine
  • "I must be the only vampire in the world sickened by the sight of blood."  ~ Simon
  • "With (a) realization came a rush of numbness -- what was the point of hating Valentine for being a monster when he didn't even know he was one?" ~ Clary
  • "Since the first time I saw you, I have belonged to you completely." ~ Jace to Clary
  • "I am a man, and men do not consume pink beverage. Get thee gone, woman, and bring me something brown." ~ Jace
    "Brown?" ~ Isabelle
"Brown is a manly color. In fact, look -- Alec is wearing it." ~ Jace
