My commentary:
  • I love how in the end of the book, Helen ends up with a blue/white scar running down the iris in her right eye shaped like a lightning bolt. After I read that, I looked back at the beginning of the book. I think it's awesome that the first word in the book's prologue begins with an O that has a little lightning bolt symbol through it. It's a little foreshadowing of the future scar. Cool typography makes me really happy sometimes.

  • I love Orion's character. Not only is he supposed to be absolutely gorgeous, but he's strong and funny, and I just wanted to lick the page every time he showed up. But, of course, this was a library book, and I don't know whose dirty hands have been all over it, so I couldn't actually lick the book. It's a real shame...
  • I can't wait for the final book in this trilogy. I'm beyond amazed by how this series ended up being. So glad I decided to try it out.

Memorable quotes:
  • "Try to remember that dreams do come true, but they don't come easily.”  ~ Morpheus
  • “It's not our talents that make us safe or dangerous, it's our choices.” ~ Helen
  • "Just once I want to come up with a plan and have it work. Is that too much to ask?" ~ Helen
  • “Helen decided that the saying about 'time healing all wounds' was a bunch of bull and probably only worked for people with very poor memories. The time she's spent apart from Lucas hadn't healed anything. The distance only made her miss him more.”
  • “Even if it kills me, staying awake and seeing you ... is better than any dream.”
  • "Hell didn't need lakes of fire to torment. Time and solitude were enough." ~ Helen
  • "Do you always wander around hell in your pajamas?" ~ Orion to Helen
  • "Daphne said you were powerful, but she never mentioned you were such a wiseass." ~ Orion to Helen
  • "I may not be able to lift a car over my head, but that doesn't mean I'm useless." ~ Matt
  • "I'll try to resist marrying him at that cute little chapel in hell. You know, the one right next to the festering pit of dead bodies?" ~ Helen to Lucas about Orion
  • "Remember there's always a grain of truth in the prophecies, no matter how much poetry has been frosted on top." ~ Lucas to Helen
  • "The whole would could be in love with you and you wouldn't even notice, would you?" ~ Hector to Helen
  • "If she slept, if she stayed awake, what did it matter? There was no rest for her no matter what she did." ~ Helen
  • "I think all those ancient prophecies are so full of poetic nonsense that half the time no one understands what they mean." ~ Helen
  • "Even if someone tells you the future, you never really know what you're going to find until you get there." ~ Helen
  • "Love doesn't make you immune to car wrecks." ~ Helen to Claire
  • "I'm so game I should change my name to Yahtzee." ~ Claire
  • "If other men were houses, Lucas was her home." ~ Helen
  • "You are downright addictive." ~ Helen to Morpheus
  • "I'm not the monster you think I am." ~ Hades to Helen
  • "It didn't matter who felt like a house or a home or a frigging motel to her. She and Lucas could never be together. Period." ~ Helen
  • "Joy was the opposite of a prison. It opened the heart instead of locking it away. Joy was freedom -- freedom from sadness, bitterness, and hatred." ~ Helen
  • "No matter how down-to-earth she was on the inside, Helen's beauty really was inhuman." ~ Lucas
  • "You're too big a part of me. I'd have to forget who I am to forget you." ~ Helen to Lucas

Book # 20: Starcrossed

Title: Starcrossed

Author: Josephine Angelini

Date started reading: Feb. 27, 2013
Date finished reading:  March 1, 2013

Publish date: May 2011
ISBN: 978-0062011992
Number of pages: 496

Official summary: "How do you defy destiny? Helen Hamilton has spent her entire sixteen years trying to hide how different she is — no easy task on an island as small and sheltered as Nantucket. And it's getting harder. Nightmares of a desperate desert journey have Helen waking parched, only to find her sheets damaged by dirt and dust. At school she's haunted by hallucinations of three women weeping tears of blood ... and when Helen first crosses paths with Lucas Delos, she has no way of knowing they're destined to play the leading roles in a tragedy the Fates insist on repeating throughout history. As Helen unlocks the secrets of her ancestry, she realizes that some myths are more than just legend. But even demigod powers might not be enough to defy the forces that are both drawing her and Lucas together — and trying to tear them apart." (http://www.josephineangelini.com)

How I obtained the book: Checked out of library

My commentary:
  • I'm rarely this impressed by a book... especially the first one in a series. It literally blew me away. There was a little lagging in the beginning, but once it picked up, I didn't want to put it down and I definitely didn't want it to end. I'm glad that I have the second book to immediately start next, and that the third and final book in the trilogy comes out soon.
  • I didn't think I'd be that interested in the concept of demigods, but the author created this amazing story using the mythology of Greek gods that already exists and adds to it.
  • Helen and Lucas have an epic-type of love. I don't like using the word "epic" to describe love very often because there aren't too many couples that I feel have that strong of a love story, but Helen and Lucas really do. I think it's a little funny that there is a quote from Lauren Kate on the cover of this book because Helen and Lucas' love story gives me all the same feelings that Kate's "Fallen" saga does with Lucinda and Daniel, who also have what I consider an "epic" love.

Memorable quotes:
  • “I don’t care how hard being together is, nothing is worse than being apart.”  ~ Helen to Lucas
  • “She decided that if Lucas was gay then she was going to have to get a sex change operation. He would be so worth it.” ~ Helen
  • "Decide which of the two options is harder, and do the other. That way, no matter how hard your choice turns out to be, at least you can find comfort in knowing you're avoiding something even worse.” ~ Helen
  • “Never say never. The gods love to toy with people who use absolutes.”
  • “You've got the killer instincts of a houseplant”  ~ Hector to Helen
  • “You and I are way too fabulous to be ordinary.”  ~ Claire to Helen
  • “The Gods know what it is to be eternal, and they love to toy with mortals who use absolutes.”
  • “And I don't just WANT you, Helen. I LOVE you. Big difference.” ~ Lucas
  • “Helen felt as if the whole world had turned into some gigantic punch line that she had waited patiently for, and then when she heard it she found it insulting. If she had been in a comedy club she would have gotten up and walked out, but instead she had to go to the comedian's house after school and let his cousin beat the crap out of her.”
  • “She would have to leave the country, or at least Nantucket, because there was no way she could live down the fact that she had tried to strangle the hottest boy on the island.”  ~ Helen
  • "Lucas, I swear to whatever god you think is holy that I will get out of this car and walk to school if you go inside and talk to my dad." ~ Helen
  • "It never fails. She's like the Einstein of guilt." ~ Jason about Lucas' mom
  • "Everything felt duller to Helen. Muffled, like her feelings were in storage, buried under mounds of packaging peanuts."
  • "Helen, you don't need to run away from yourself anymore. ... You can't be afraid of your power anymore, Helen. You are the strongest of us all, but all that strength is for nothing until you own it." ~ Lucas
  • "The humans who love us never last long. Scions are tragedy magnets. It's safer for them if we leave before the trouble starts." ~ Daphne

How I obtained the book: Got a free copy via my employer.

My commentary:
  • Not that the first book was bad or even close to bad, but this one was totally amazing and blew the first one away completely. It stopped focusing on the love triangle and focused on Skye being torn between the light and the dark. It made things much more interesting to get rid of most of the teen angsty love triangle crap.
  • It sort of cracks me up that the book's dust jacket says this series is good for fans of Lauren Kate's "Fallen" series, Becca Fitzpatrick's "Hush Hush" series, and Cynthia Hand's "Unearthly" series. It's like they decided to include every single one of the popular young adult angel-related books in their recommendations.
  • SPOILERS AHEAD: I called Skye's decision from the moment in the first book when it was revealed that her parents had been a "good" angel and a "bad" angel. I knew in the end she'd choose to embrace both the light and the dark and become a new kind of angel ... one with silver wings instead of white or black. I didn't expect Raven to become other silver winged angel when Skye had to save her life, but that was an intriguing plot twist. I also didn't really expect that Devin would decide to "jump" and change sides of the battle, despite the fact he constantly struggled with the "good" angels controlling his entire life. I'm not quite sure what the deal with Ian is. He was just a human, but the end of this book makes it seem like he was a rogue angel as with Skye's aunt

Memorable quotes:
  • “I am always torn. Between control and chaos; passion and tranquility. Between what's fated and what I want. Part of me longs to take the plunge, to dive off headfirst and let the feeling of control evaporate on the wind. And part of me wants to be in a place where I'd never have to worry about that choice -- or any choice. Where peace and calm are the only things I'd feel.” ~ Skye
  • "It must be hard having only those two options. Dark and Light and nothing in between." ~ Skye
  • "Nothing perfect ever lasts." ~ Skye
  • "I love Colorado. The mountains are so passionate. They just make me want to run to the top and yell obscene things to the valleys below." ~ Ardith
  • "You've always been one to follow your own star, Skye. Just make sure to pick a good one to guide you." ~ Aunt Jo
  • "Do you have a masters in I'm Always Right or something?" ~ Skye to Aunt Jo
  • "I'd rather be in love and make the wrong choice once in a while than always be right and be alone." ~ Skye
  • "Nothing about you is normal." ~ Devin to Skye
  • "I couldn't make a choice between chaos and control. Not because it had been made for me. But because there was no choice to make. It wasn't one or the other. They were both inside me. They were both a part of me. I was nothing without both sides. Take one away and I would fall." ~ Skye

My commentary:
  • Pre-reading: Once again, I'm going to read this series mostly because I think the covers are pretty. Hopefully it will turn out to be worth my time.
  • Post-reading: I like the overall storyline of this book, but the author made it focus too much on what appears to be a love triangle, making Skye choose between a "good angel" and a "fallen angel." Why does everything always have to have a love triangle???

Memorable quotes:
  • "Together (Devin and Asher) were like this force of energy that constantly seemed to be adding up to trouble." ~ Skye
  • "When are you going to stop looking at the world in black and white?" ~ Asher to Skye
  • "What was I all of a sudden, the Welcome Wagon?" ~ Skye
  • "(Devin) was more of a dove. Asher was the hawk." ~ Skye
  • "Rule-breakers color outside the lines. They change the world." ~ Asher
  • "It's a misconception that you need a heart to love." ~ Asher
  • "You can't run from your destiny. It follows you everywhere." ~ Raven

How I obtained the book: Checked out of library

My commentary:
  • I'm not sure what I think about this series. I find it very interesting, but I'm not sure I like it all that much. I definitely don't like it enough to buy the books. Normally if I like a series, I want to have copies of all the books basically as trophies on my bookshelves, but I have no desire to buy these. It's weird.

Memorable quotes:
  • "My bed is empty, and I'm left with only my guilt for a companion. I hug my pillow tight and wonder how long I will be able to survive with the crack in my heart. Perhaps it will grow large enough to consume me." ~ Nikki
  • "Dr. Hill couldn't help me face reality, because my reality was so unreal to humans." ~ Nikki
  • "I want you to know, here and now, that if we can't get Jack back... you won't be able to stop me from kill Cole. Whether I have to break his heart or tear him apart." ~ Will
  • "You showed me that relationships are worth sacrifices. I used to think they were fleeting, but I know better now. You made me a better person. I mean, a better immortal." ~ Cole to Nikki
  • "You can't hide your humanity!" ~ Cole to Nikki
  • "Nobody lost points for going the wrong way at first in a maze. But they did in life. Every wrong turn had an effect on the rest of the maze. Every mistake affected the path." ~ Nikki
  • "Memories were part of what I kept secured in the dam around my heart." ~ Nikki
  • "Let's take inventory of our priorities. First, go to the Underworld and save my brother. Second, don't die while doing it. Third, start a grassroots campaign to add diversity to the state's conservative legislature. Fourth, then maybe tackle my excessive drinking." ~ Will to Nikki
  • "You're looking at my hair like an addict at a crack carnival." ~ Cole to Nikki
  • "It's like your brain is on a ten-second delay." ~ Cole to Nikki
  • "You've got some strong memories. Usually the human projections look like an aura, almost, around the person. I knew yours would be stronger because you survived the Feed, but I thought that meant you would project a more focused object, like a rope. You, however, are projecting an entire national park." ~ Cole to Nikki
  • "(Wanderers) are starving for energy, and they can sniff it out and all of this is basically a neon sign that says EAT AT JOE'S." ~ Cole
  • "You always did enjoy the impossible tasks." ~ Ashe to Cole
  • "Everlings had a way of infusing ordinary objects with deeper meaning." ~ Nikki
  • "Get too wet, and you could drown in your own despair." ~ Cole about the Ring of Water
  • "Love doesn't matter here." ~ Queen

How I obtained the book: Pre-ordered for $12.63 from Walmart using a giftcard I got for Christmas

My commentary:
  • I don't really have words for how amazing this book is. I love Sydney's character, and I love Adrian, and I love them together as a couple. I'm glad that he was his dedicated self in his pursuit of her love, and I'm glad she finally realized that she was just as in love with him as he is with her. The book was romantic ... and funny ... and sometimes frustrating ... and sometimes a little heart-breaking when Sydney rejects Adrian again at first.
  • I'm glad Rose and Dimitri made an appearance because I frankly miss those characters when they're not in my life.
  • I love that Sydney's experimenting with magic and starting to question what all the alchemists believe. I'm ecstatic that Sydney conjured up a little demon (or "dragon" as she wants to consider it) as part of a spell, and it thinks that Sydney and Adrian are its parents. They have this little demon love-child, and they haven't even had sex yet.

Memorable quotes:
  • "Better to risk being sacrificed than face the Alchemists' wrath." ~ Sydney
  • "Humans weren't supposed to weild magic -- and they certainly weren't supposed to enjoy it." ~ Sydney
  • "Maybe Moroi and dhampirs weren't creatures of evil, like I'd once believed, but they certainly weren't human." ~ Sydney
  • "I'm done with the pouting. Done with being moody -- well, I mean, I'm always a little moody. That's what Adrian Ivashkov's all about. But I'm done with the excessive stuff. They didn't get me anywhere with Rose. It won't get me anywhere with you." ~ Adrian to Sydney
  • "I'm going to just go on loving you, even if it's hopeless." ~ Adrian to Sydney
  • "If I keep loving you, maybe you'll eventually crack and love me too. Hell, I'm pretty sure you're already half in love with me." ~ Adrian to Sydney
  • "Maybe vampires were unnatural creatures, but they certainly had excellent taste in caterers." ~ Sydney
  • "I'm a master of self-control." ~ Adrian
  • "Like Sonya and Mikhail, there was a bond of love between Rose and Dimitri that was almost palpable." ~ Sydney
  • "Magic leaves a mark on your blood that permeates your whole body." ~ Ms. Terwilliger
  • "Something I'd learned over the years: it was never a good thing when people said, 'Here's something I never told you...'" ~ Sydney
  • "I knew some girls thought it was sexy to have men fight over them. Not me." ~ Sydney
  • "The problem with having so many people call me by nicknames was that when someone called me by my actual name, it usually meant something serious was happening." ~ Sydney
  • "If you want to get a guy to do something that might be difficult, then the best way is to distract him so that he can't devote his full brainpower to the consequences." ~ Adrian
"You don't have a lot of faith in your own gender." ~ Sydney
"Hey, I'm telling you the truth. I've been distracted by sexy dresses a lot." ~ Adrian
  • "Adrian was distracted by a lot of things. Fondue. T-shirts. Kittens." ~ Sydney
  • "My life's already complicated enough without witches coming after me." ~ Sydney
  • "We chase away the shadows around each other. Our backgrounds don't matter. What we have is bigger than that. I love you, and beneath all that logic, calculation, and superstition, I know you love me too." ~ Adrian to Sydney
  • "This isn't a Disney movie where I have an adorable sidekick. You aren't coming out." ~ Sydney to the "dragon"
  • "Adrian Ivashkov wasn't easy to surprise, but I surprised him then when I brought his mouth toward mind. I kissed him, and for a moment, he was too stunned to respond." ~ Sydney
  • "You're not losing your virginity in a dream. If that's even possible. I don't want to deal with the philosophical side of it. And besides, there's no need to rush anyway. Sometimes it's worth lingering on the journey a while before getting to the destination." ~ Adrian to Sydney
  • "I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him closer. I didn't care that we were out in public. I didn't care that he was Moroi. All that mattered was that he was Adrian, my Adrian. My match. My partner in crime, in the long battle I'd just signed on for to right the wrongs in the Alchemist and Moroi worlds. Maybe Marcus was right that I'd also signed myself up for disaster, but I didn't care. In that moment, it seemed that as long as Adrian and I were together, there was no challenge too great for us." ~ Sydney
  • "Let me get this straight. The future of our relationship hinged on advice from a fifteen-year-old girl, a probably untrue story from a one-eyed Chihuahua trainer, and me unromantically -- yet skillfully -- kissing you on top of silverware and china?" ~ Adrian to Sydney
  • "(Adrian) was too perfect, despite being one of the most imperfect people I knew." ~ Sydney

Official summary: "The war is over. The humans lost. And in the shattered world that arises, the vampires are king. It’s Dawn Montgomery’s duty to ensure the safety of her fellow humans within the city, but also to serve as Delegate to Lord Valentine. She is the conduit between the two worlds, the human and vampire, and the youngest to ever do so. But when Lord Valentine’s son, Victor, steps into her life, everything changes. She assumes he wants her blood, like all vampires. But he’s after more: her heart." (http://www.jalondon.com)

How I obtained the book: Checked out of library

My commentary:
  • Pre-reading thought: I must admit this -- I am going to read this series mostly just because of how utterly beautiful the covers are. I know I shouldn't judge a book by its cover and sometimes it bites me on the ass when I do it, but I can't help it. They're so pretty...
  • It's funny that I ended up starting this book on Valentine's Day when the "lord" vampire in the book has the last name of Valentine. It wasn't intentional.
  • I'm not usually much for dystopian type books, but this one was different. I guess a world of human misery that was brought upon them by a war with vampires makes me much more interested in it.
  • The romance and possible future between Dawn and the vampire Victor is an intriguing storyline, and I can't wait to read the other books in the series.
  • Trusting my instincts about this book based on its cover turned out to be good this time.
  • Spoiler-filled comments: I totally called it that Sin would be a bad guy when he showed up in the book. I was not at all surprised that he turned out to be a vampire or Lord Valentine's son. I was, however, surprised somewhat that Dawn's brother was Sin's lackey vampire who was stalking Dawn. I'm not sure how I was surprised by that. I should've expected that her brother wasn't truly dead. I'm really curious to see what "destiny" Dawn has that the assassin was talking to Dawn's father about in the very beginning of the book. I wonder if it was her destiny to become a vampire and rule with Victor.  I wonder how Dawn will handle being a vampire, which the end of the book implies will happen... which I also expected to happen

Memorable quotes:
  •  "Dawn lives in ignorance, and it is my dearest wish that she stay that way forever." ~ Dawn's father
  • "When someone has the power to destroy all you hold dear if he's not happy, you do whatever it takes to keep him satisfied. Even if it kills you inside. Even if most of what you hold dear has already been taken." ~ Dawn about Lord Valentine
  • "Sometimes we just want to prove that we're not afraid of the dark. Even when we are." ~ Dawn
  • "The nightmares devour my sleep; I can't let them consume my waking moments, too." ~ Dawn
  • "Not all the monsters have fangs." ~ Dawn
  • "That's the thing about people in this city: No one cares. Was it always this way? If so, what were we fighting for during the war?" ~ Dawn
  • "Since the war, it's like the world has gone totally off its axis. The only rules that exist are those for survival." ~ Dawn
  • "Obviously Valentine has control issues." ~ Dawn
"He needs to see a shrink." ~ Michael
  • "I'll single-handedly start another war with the vamps if Valentine hurts you." ~ Michael to Dawn
  • "Eternal life is a tempting purchase. But at what price? One I'd never pay. Nothing is worth becoming a monster." ~ Dawn
  • "Such is my life as a delegate. I've become a love-her-or-hate-her kind of girl." ~ Dawn
  • "I have a very simple philosophy: If you want something, you have to be willing to do whatever it takes to get it." ~ Sin
  • "Before I was turned, I saw all vampires as monsters. Funny, now I think it's the humans. I laugh and cry and feel the same as they do. I'd never hurt a soul, but if I walked these streets openly, I'd be staked." ~ Martha
  • "I've known humans, but I've never known anyone like you, Dawn Montgomery. You're so passionate in your beliefs. We live forever and have started to take so much for granted. You appreciate everything." ~ Victor
  • "I hate when someone answers a question with a question." ~ Dawn
  • "I despise when vampires turn children -- even when it's their own." ~ Victor
  • "People are either reviled by vampires -- or they want to become one. But forever isn't what anyone expects it to be." ~ Victor

Book #14 : Cross My Heart, Hope to Die

Title: Cross My Heart, Hope to Die (Book #5 of The Lying Game series)

Author: Sara Shepard

Date started reading: Feb. 12, 2013
Date finished reading:  Feb. 14, 2013

Publish date: February 2013
ISBN: 978-0062128195
Number of pages: 336

Official summary: "It's not easy being me. But my twin sister has no choice. When I died two months ago, my killer told my twin sister to become me — or else. Now Emma has it down to a T. She tosses her hair with the signature Sutton Mercer flip and can lead a Lying Game prank with the best of them. She's even repairing my relationship with my adoptive family. The only thing she hasn't done is solve my murder. Then our birth mother, the woman who abandoned us, showed up in Tucson. Emma hasn't seen Becky in twelve years, but Becky recognizes Emma immediately — as Emma. Is it a mother's intuition ... or does Becky know I'm already gone?" (http://www.epicreads.com)

How I obtained the book: Pre-ordered for $11.79 from Walmart using a giftcard I got for Christmas

My commentary:
  • I can't believe that this series has went five books and the girls still have no idea who killed Sutton. I think there's only one book left in the series, so hopefully, everything will get figured out and it doesn't end up where Emma never knows what happens to Sutton. Surely, the author wouldn't do that.
  • Part of me keeps hoping that Sutton isn't really dead. I keep hoping that she's actually in a coma somewhere and her spirit has just left her body, but she's alive and will wake up. Since Emma's been in Sutton's place for two months, Sutton was never reported as missing, so if her body's off somewhere in a coma, he'd be listed as a "Jane Doe." And, of course, no one would've reported Emma as a missing person most likely either because she had just been in foster homes all her life, and no one really cared enough for her to care that she's gone.
  • Spoilery comments: I was totally shocked when it was revealed that Becky had a third daughter years after having the twins. And the fact that no one knew that she had twins in the first place. She had only wanted one daughter, so that's why she left Sutton with her parents and took off with Emma. Then she found out she was pregnant years later, and abandoned Emma because she was off her psych meds and wasn't thinking straight.  Then the third daughter was taken away from her because of her instability. I hope that Emma gets to meet the other daughter in the final book because, if Sutton truly is dead, Emma deserves to finally have a sister who is alive.

Memorable quotes:
  • "We loved each other with a fierce loyalty, but we weren't the best at saying it. I think we were all so focused on maintaining our fabulous images that we forgot they weren't always real." ~ Sutton about her group of friends
  • "Eating in nice restaurants instead of Jack in the Box was definitely on the list of Things That Do Not Suck About Being Sutton Mercer. ... The cost of her new life made it hard to enjoy the perks." ~ Emma
  • "After seeing her mother tonight, Emma was no longer so sure her story would have a happy ending."

How I obtained the book: Got a free advanced reader copy from my employer

My commentary:
  • Ultimately, as odd as I found this series, I also ended up loving it by the end. I'm really glad that I got the free copy of this book that led me to read the entire series. I even cried a little as I finished this book wishing that the series wasn't over.
  • Spoilers ahead: This had such a sad "happy" ending. Yes, Evie was able to send the paranormals who wanted to go home back home, but then her friend/roommate Arianna decided to go too, and Evie's sister Vivian, who had just woken up from her coma and started to seem like she could be a good person had to go to the other realm to shut the door that was created between realms. Lend's mother went to the other realm, so he lost his mother. It was so much loss for a "happy ending."

Memorable quotes:
  • “You stink like a faerie, all flowers and sunshine and evil manipulation.”  ~ Arianna to Evie
  • “I still had an irrational desire to do an interpretive dance about rainbows, but it was a small price to pay for being healed.” ~ Evie

  • “(Thanks) for being stupid enough to love your crazy, murdering lunatic of a sister and being such a pathetic dork that I couldn’t help but love you, too”  ~ Vivian to Evie
  • “Please know my deep respect for humans and human life. Such beautiful, fragile animals, so fleeting and easily broken and yet powerful beyond anything faeries can ever hope to be. We cannot create but live forever, unchanging. You change with every breath, dying even as you live, but your thread to eternity and immortality is reborn with every new generation.” ~ The light fairy queen
  • "Seriously, pink is a neutral color!" ~ Evie
  • "You really should give the whole coma thing a shot. It makes life much less complicated." ~ Vivian to Evie
  • "A for effort, ladies, but F for clarity. You do realize that your weird poem things never explain anything." ~ Evie about banshee chant
  • "Even without our kind your world has mysteries of its own." ~ Nona to Evie
  • "I'm done. I don't know how to do what they want me to, and the idea of trying terrifies me. I'm done with the supernatural drama, tired of being caught up in the middle of it, tired of being a pawn in their stupid prophecies and petty fights." ~ Evie
  • "As much as you think you've always missed out on this ridiculous idea of 'normal' that you have, the fact of the matter is you really can live normally. Because you're alive, and you're more or less human, and you belong here. You can make your life anything you want to." ~ Arianna to Evie
  • "I cannot tell you how many times I've wished that, in place of a soul, I could fill you with an adequate amount of fear. You never seem to realize how hard it is to keep you alive." ~ Reth to Evie

  • "You don't love me, Reth. You love this idea you have of what I should be. What I am now bugs the crap out of you." ~ Evie
  • "I could never be with someone or love someone who didn't love me and accept me for who I am now." ~ Evie

How I obtained the book: Checked out of library

My spoilery commentary:
  • So as it turns out my use of the "True Blood" gif in the post about the first book in this series was actually spot-on. Evie's father was a faerie so in a way, she's a part faerie, so the fact that I thought of Sookie finding out she was part faerie and thinking it was lame was frankly perfect.
  • I liked this book better than the first one, and I think that's mostly due to the introduction of Jack. He's such an immature smart-ass, and he's totally hilarious in some parts of the book. I was pretty sure from the beginning that he wasn't to be trusted totally, and I was right because he did betray Evie. Despite everything, he seems like a good guy though... or at least as good as someone could be being raised by fairies when you're human.
  • I really like the little typography details in this series. That's such a design-nerd thing to say, but it's true. These little touches are cute...

Memorable quotes:
  • “Sometimes I wanted to take a memory - one perfect memory - curl up in it, and go to sleep.” ~ Evie
  • "Only he could do this to me -- make me feel this awful and confused. When I was with Reth, everything lonely and heartbroken in me seemed to well to the surface, begging to let him take it  away." ~ Evie
  • "I feel like I'm doomed to lose everyone, always. I can't seem to keep the people I love." ~ Evie
  • "I think swooning is highly underrated. You could bring it back into vogue." ~ Jack
  • "My future felt like a huge blank, dependent on variables I couldn't control." ~ Evie
  • “You know when you’re on the edge of wake and sleep, and the dream you’re leaving feels more real to you than anything the world has to offer? When you open your eyes, it’s as though part of you stayed, and you know you’ll never feel things quite as deeply, experience them quite as truly as you had in that tiny space of awareness between darkness and light.” ~ Evie
  • "Sometimes reality sucked." ~ Evie
  • "(I) had no doubt that where Jack was, problems would follow." ~ Evie
  • "Eternal life is bad enough without giving it to pests like you." ~ Arianna to Jack
  • "Girls are mean. At least faeries simply kill you if they don't want you around." ~ Jack
  • "I'm a magnet for crazies, I guess." ~ Evie
  • "There were a lot of things wrong with me, but loving Lend was definitely not one of them." ~ Evie
  • "It's amazing what one can learn if it means not starving to death." ~ Jack
  • "Faeries aren't as mystical as they want you to think." ~ Jack
  • "Not everything is life and death. A little party never hurt anyone." ~ Jack
  • "I am so sick of moral dilemmas!" ~ Evie
  • "There were enough unanswered questions in my life; I didn't like having to wonder whether or not I was a good person." ~ Evie
  • "Eternal life is no life at all." ~ Arianna
  • "Say what you will about zombies and their hygiene issues, at least they kill you fast. College acceptance boards? They like to draw out the torture as long as possible." ~ Evie
  • "Why couldn't my glamour-piercing eyes have a laser function? I wouldn't kill him. I'd just burn the word 'freak' into his forehead." ~ Evie about Jack
  • "Leave it to a boy to make the Faerie Realms look like a dump." ~ Evie about Jack
  • "What's the point in hating something if you aren't proactive?" ~ Jack
  • "The cold, empty feeling I'd been running from for so long welled up, threatening to overwhelm me with everything I lacked. I wasn't special. I wasn't paranormal. I wasn't even normal. I was neither. Nothing." ~ Evie

Book #11: Paranormalcy

Title: Paranormalcy

Author: Kiersten White

Date started reading: Feb. 6, 2013
Date finished reading: Feb. 7, 2013

Publish date: August 2010
ISBN: 978-0061985843
Number of pages: 352

Official summary: "Weird as it is working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, Evie's always thought of herself as normal. Sure, her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals' glamours, but still. Normal. Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie's dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths, and even worse, that she is at the centre of a dark prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures. So much for normal." (http://kierstenwrites.blogspot.com)

How I obtained the book: Checked out of library

My sorta-spoilery commentary:

  •  I knew this series was going to be odd. All you have to do is read the book description to know it's going to be at least a little weird. I wasn't quite prepared for how truly weird it is. Don't get me wrong... I love it, but it's weird.
  • The author doesn't use cuss words 99% of the time when they could be used. Evie's best friend is a mermaid who has to talk to her through a translator on her tank. The translator won't translate cuss words, so it says "bleep" instead. Evie ends up using "bleep" in every day life instead of cussing. It's funny, but sort of annoying at the same time.
  • When Evie finds out that the fairies "created" her and Vivian as "empty ones" who were built to steal soles from immortal paranormal beings, my mind flashed back to the scene in "True Blood" when Sookie found out she was part fairy. If I was in Evie's position, I think I'd react exactly like Sookie does in that scene... both confused and annoyed at how lame that is. Of course, Evie isn't supposed to be a fairy herself, just made by them, so it's not quite the same as Sookie. Did that make any sense at all? No? Well maybe you need to read the book then...

Memorable quotes:
  • "Tasers are a one-size-fits-all paranormal butt-kicking option. Mine's pink with rhinestones." ~ Evie (I found the graphic below for this quote on tumblr and laughed)

  • "I couldn't be one or the other -- by being both normal and paranormal I didn't belong anywhere. I was sick of not belonging." ~ Evie
  • "Death in sparkly platform sandals. It's a nice image, at least."~Lend
  • "I wonder if things have always been this weird and I just never knew, or if they're getting worse." ~ Evie
  • "IPCA acted on absolutes, and I was increasingly realizing that nothing was absolute in this world." ~ Evie
  •  "We're both Empty Ones -- like little, hollow china dolls." ~ Vivian to Evie
  • "How do you respond when someone tells you how easy it would be to kill you, then says she wants to be best friends, family?" ~ Evie
  • "Just because you don't know what you are doesn't make you scary. I'm pretty familiar with that. Besides, how could I ever be afraid of someone who wears so much pink?" ~ Lend to Evie
  • "It's like teenage nirvana!" ~ Evie about the mall
"And here I was thinking purgatory." ~ Lend
  • "Normal was stranger than paranormal sometimes." ~ Evie
  • "If it were possible to die of happiness, you could have written my obituary right then." ~ Evie

Book #10: Hilarity Ensues

Title: Hilarity Ensues (According to the dust cover, apparently this is being called the third in final book in a trilogy of Tucker's books, including "I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell" and "Assholes Finish First." This is the first time I've ever heard of them being called a trilogy.")

Author: Tucker Max

Date started reading: Feb. 05, 2013
Date finished reading: ------

Publish date: February 2012
ISBN: 978-1451669039
Number of pages: 448

Official summary: "Tucker Max’s third and final book in his series of stories about his drunken debauchery and ridiculous antics. What began as a simple sentence on an obscure website, 'My name is Tucker Max, and I am an asshole,' and developed into two infamously genre-defining books, I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell and Assholes Finish First, ends here. But as you should expect from Tucker by now, he is going out with a bang — literally and figuratively. In this book, you’ll learn:
  • How to live and work in Cancun, while still enrolled in Law School,
  • Why Halloween is really awesome,
  • How to subtly torture a highstrung roommate until he explodes with furious anger over a misplaced condiment,
  • What really happened when a dirty pageant girl tried to sue Tucker because he told the truth,
  • Why you should never accept a homemade treat from a hippie with a van, and
  • What happens when Tucker turns sexting into a sport.
He’s still Tucker Max, and — for one more book — he’s still an asshole." (http://www.tuckermax.com)

How I obtained the book: Got as a Christmas present

My commentary:
  • I decided I needed a little break from all the emotional books I've been reading so far this year, so I picked this one up off my shelf. I'll be back to my normally scheduled emotion-inducing-supernatural books soon.
  • I'm so glad Tucker's website has a bunch of his books' best lines, so I don't have to type up everything I want to quote. I can just copy and paste some of them. It makes this a lot easier.
  • I normally am supportive of what Tucker does/say because of the freedom of speech and the fact that I think he's awesome, but in this book, he goes on and on about the girl who had sued him. He wanted to tell his side of the story since he won the case and could finally tell his side, but dear God, he goes on and on and on for 82 pages about it. There's telling your story and then there's telling it and then being immature and vindictive.
